| The study examined the economics of cassava production in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, specifically described the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, estimated the costs and returns of cassava production, and identified the determinants of technical inefficiencies of cassava production in the study area. The findings of this study revealed that young, married, educated and business-oriented farmers dominated the cassava production sector of this study. The business of cassava production in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria was very profitable, as the result of the costs and returns analysis showed that the net margins of cassava production was estimated to be N5,201,598.00, implying that the percentage net margin was 94.63%. The results further showed that marital status, social organization and access to credit had a positive influence on the technical inefficiency of cassava farmers, while, farm experience and level of educational had a negative impact on the technical inefficiencies of the farmers. Arising from the findings, it was recommended that farmers should be encouraged to form cooperatives and join farmers’ organizations to enable them have access to credits and extension Officers who are multi-purpose vehicles for dissemination of agro-innovations. It was also suggested that Government and developed NGO’s should make provisions where small scale farmers can access quality farm equipment and machinery at subsidized rates so as to increase productivity. Younger farmers should be encouraged to venture into the business of cassava farming since age had a positive relationship with productivity of the cassava farmers. | |
