Effect of Farmers-Herdsmen Conflict on Arable Crop Farmers in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria

This study investigated the effects of farmers-herdsmen conflict on arable crop farmers in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. A simple random sampling procedure was utilized to select 120 farmers which made up the sample size for the study. Data analysis was achieved using descriptive statistics and binary logistics regression. The result from the study showed that four (4) out of the ten (10) socioeconomic effects of farmers-herdsmen conflict on farming households investigated were seen as serious effects. These socioeconomic effects included Loss of human life (mean = 2.83), Acquisition of Weapons/Arms (mean = 2.78), Displacement of farmers (mean = 2.71), and Sexual harassment of women (mean = 3.14). Age of the farmer (β=0.1218; p<0.01) and level of education of the farmers (β=-5.4071e-6; p<0.05) had a positive and negative significant influence on the likelihood of engaging in farmers-herdsmen conflicts at 1% and 5% level of probability respectively. The study in this way suggested that cattle rearing should be done at ranches while the herders ought to be given the required training for effective management of the ranching.
