ABSTRACT

The study determined the level of utilization of information on management of Newcastle Disease by poultry farmers among states. A purposive sampling technique was employed for this study based on the unavailability of poultry farmers’ records involving three states, three local government areas per state, and three wards per local government based on their high prevalence of Newcastle Disease. Fifteen (15) farmers who were involved in poultry farming were purposively selected from each ward making a total sample of four hundred and five (405) farmers in the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and Chi-square test with option of cross tabulation were employed to analyze the data in order to achieve the objectives of the study. The results showed that most (42.2%) of the poultry farmers indicated that they sourced information from extension agents. Majority (47.2%) of the poultry farmers indicated that they utilizes the information they sourced to treat the diseases of their birds. Majority (94.6%) of the poultry farmers indicated that the credibility of the sources of information was the reason why they utilized information. Majority of the poultry farmers across the states and FCT indicated that they utilized of information sourced once monthly to manage Newcastle Disease. It was recommended that there should be synergy between extension agents and veterinary worker who are the major information sources, to ensure effective extension service delivery to enable the extension agent to learn more technical issue from veterinary workers and for veterinary workers to learn effective extension techniques from extension agents.
