This paper discussed the livelihood activities of artisanal fisher folks living in the tropical wetlands of Nigeria. Estuarine wetland saltmarsh or mangrove habitats are some of the most productive habitats globally for fishes, crustaceans, bivalves and many other marine aquatic organisms noting that wetlands contain tolerant flora and fauna in an environment with continuous tidal mixing between fresh and salt waters. Diadromous, catadromous and anadromous fishes use this habitat as breeding or spawning grounds and humans derive food, fuel, income and many other benefits from the estuarine wetland mangrove habitats. The paper also x-rays the need for infrastructural development including fisheries extension programmes and interventions to improve the socio-economic conditions of all wetland inhabitants.
