Response of Some Varieties of Lowland Rice (Oryza spp.) for Tolerance to Flooding Across Four Locations in Delta State, Nigeria

The study evaluated 21 identified rice varieties with flood tolerance traits in two freshwater and two estuarine environments. The experiment used a split-plot arrangement with three replications in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The cultivars’ stability and adaptability were assessed. The parameter smeasured were seed yield in kg/ha, in g/m2, and 1000-grain weight (g). The seed yield (kg/ha) results against the PCA showed that Faro 44, Faro 37 and Faro 67 gave the highest mean values of 3760 kg/ha, 3890 kg/ha, and 3850 kg/ha and 3660 kg/ha, 3870 kg/ha and 3620 kg/ha respectively, in first and second planting in the freshwater environment. The best environment for growing rice was established to be the freshwater environment. The study concluded that the freshwater environment supports high yields, and is stable. Farmers are advised to plant Faro 44, Faro 37 and Faro 67 due to their ability to withstand flood stress, and their high yield potential.
