Conservation of mangroves through involvement of different stakeholders has been a major problem in Nigeria. This study assessed the willingness to conserve (WTC), reasons to conserve, and also developed a joint participatory model for Uzere mangrove forest conservation. Three communities, namely Ezede, Uheri and Uweye in Uzere were selected for the study. A structured questionnaire and interview schedules were employed to collect information on WTC, and reasons why the mangrove forest should be conserved. Systematic random sampling was used to administer the questionnaire to every fifth households in Uzere. A total of 300 questionnaires were administered. Descriptive statistics were employed to give insights into WTC and reasons why the mangrove forest should be conserved. A joint participatory model involving different stakeholders was also developed to sustainably manage Uzere mangrove forest. The results show that 94.0% of respondents are willing to conserve the mangrove forest with a mean of 1.06, standard error of mean (SEM) of ±0.014 and standard deviation (SD) of ±0.238. Thirty-seven percent of respondents gave source of livelihoods, maintenance of biodiversity and environmental protection as the major reasons why the mangrove forest should be conserved with a mean of 3.75, SEM of ±0.117 and SD of ±2.033. A joint participatory model indicating different forest stakeholders and their roles in the conservation of Uzere mangrove forest was developed. The joint participatory model is suitable for protecting Uzere mangrove forest and its sustainable management.
