Morphometric Characterization of Hybrid Progenies of Nile Tilapia and Ecotype Cichlid, ‘Wesafu’

The Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) and Ecotype Cichlid ‘Wesafu’ tilapia were paired to produce (Hybrid) F1, (Reciprocal hybrid) nF1, (Backcross) BcF1 and (Reciprocal backcross) nBcF1.genotypes. Using 50 samples of the hybrids, eighteen (18) morphometric traits were measured with a meter rule and vernier caliper, and subjected to multivariate discriminate analysis. The predictors were measured using Buss truss protocols because fish growth rate differs, the measured traits were subjected to log transformation to remove size effects on the final analysis. Results showed that the dependent variables’ genotypes could be correctly identified when predicting variables (morphometrics) were analyzed. Head length, body length, snout length, and maximal vertical mouth were the most important parameters that could be used in assigning the hybrids to their base population; hence, they served as a baseline index for the identification of the hybrids.
