ABSTRACT Ina study to evaluate the influence of selected forms of yam peels on the physical properties of an alfisol, and  growth parameters of okra in Asaba, Nigeria, fresh and burnt yam peels were incorporated into the soil in four treatments in a completely randomized experimental design as follows: T1 = no yam peels (control; T2 = 10kg of fresh yam peels/plot; T3 = 10kg of burnt yam peels/plot, and T4 = 10kg of a combination of fresh and burnt peels (1:1)/plot. The experiment was replicated three times. Physical and growth measurements taken were bulk density, total porosity and moisture content, percentage germination, okra height (cm), okra stem girth (cm), okra leaf area (cm2) and number of okra leaves. Data were analyzed using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and means were set apart using Fisher’s Least Significance Difference (FLSD). Results showed that plots amended with a combination of fresh and burnt peels (T4) recorded the best result of 1.32g for bulk density, 50% for total porosity and 53.8% for moisture content. Results on okra growth parameters showed that highest percentage germination (98%), plant height (132.2cm), mean number of okra leaves (14) and stem girth (4.9cm) also occurred in the T4 plots. The control plots had the lowest values for all of the soil and okra growth parameters. Combining fresh and burnt yam peels in soil amendments was therefore recommended for best growth of okra.
