ABSTRACT
Climate variation in recent time has been associated with low crop yield in Nigeria. The study investigated yam farmers’ adaptation strategies to climate variation in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to randomly select 240 yam farmers in the study area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The results revealed that most of the adaptation strategies employed by the yam farmers in the study area were mulching with mean point (x̅) of x̅ 3.00; movement to new sites (x̅ = 22.61); mixed cropping (x̅ = 3.00) and increase in farm size (x̅ = 2.68). The study further revealed that the major challenges encountered by the yam farmers were reduction in the yield of yam (x̅ = 2.8) and reduction in soil fertility (x̅ = 2.98). It was therefore recommended that enlightenment campaigns on adaptation strategies on climate variation should be intensified by the government through the extension officers in the study area. |
